Effective immediately, the freeze on nominations for the 2012 By-election in Toronto Danforth has been lifted .

All persons wishing to stand as a candidate for nomination are required to complete the nomination package in full. These completed forms, together with a Criminal Records Check and a recent (within the last 30 days) Equifax Credit Report should be delivered either in person or via courier to:

Judi Longfield, Executive Director, LPC(O)
10 St. Mary Street Suite 205,
Toronto, ON M4Y1P9

Mark the exterior of the package: NOMINATION PAPERS “PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL”

Nomination Papers —– Nomination Rules

All Nomination forms will be reviewed by the Green Light committee. A Qualified Nomination Contestant will receive an e-mail confirmation at which time they will be able to make arrangements with LPC (O) to receive 300 memberships and a current membership list for the riding.

Rule 6.3 of the Ontario Rules for the Selection of Candidates provides that Nomination Contestants must consent to any and all background checks that the Ontario Campaign Chairs consider to be appropriate to have undertaken. While this may vary from candidate to candidate, we have determined that at minimum, in all cases, the required checks will include a criminal record check through the police, and a credit check through a credit reporting agency such as Equifax (www.equifax.ca) or TransUnion (www.transunion.ca).

While the Rules merely require candidates to sign authorizations permitting Party staff to obtain such credit checks, credit checks and criminal record checks are not typically released to third parties, and accordingly, potential nomination candidates are advised that they must obtain such reports on their own, and submit them, wherever possible, with their nomination papers, or in any case, as soon as possible thereafter.

Credit reports can be obtained online for a moderate charge, and most police services will provide a written response to such requests in short order.

Nomination papers submitted without such checks will not be refused by LPCO, but may not be processed through the Green Light Committee, until the necessary reports have been obtained.

Please join the leader, Bob Rae & other Liberals in this year’s parade. Associations can bring as many volunteers to wear your t-shirts or to dress in red colours. Remember that it is often hot at Pride, you will be walking a fair distance and you will likely get wet due to the high number of water guns. Dress appropriately with comfortable shoes!

Time: 1:30pm
Location: Harold Town Park – Corner of Collier and Church Streets meeting up with Liberal float & parade contingent @ Church and Park Rd. for 2:00pm;
Parade Route: Proceeds west along Bloor to Yonge and south to Gerrard street east on Gerrard to Church;

Traditionally the Federal and Provincial supporters all march together. There will be a flatbed float dressed and orchestrated by the Provincials. By recruiting a large number of volunteers to march in the parade there will be a sea of Liberal red that will stand out in this colourful parade. Giveaways will be red or Liberal branded.

This year Pride Toronto celebrates 31 years of the Pride Parade. The theme of this year’s Pride is Dream Big and the theme of the Pride Parade is “You Belong”. Rather than compete with this theme, we would like to directly attach ourselves to it through the slogan “Liberals: You Belong”.

Look forward to seeing everyone there. Come and celebrate!!!

The Liberal Party of Canada is committed to democratic renewal – and that means a commitment to open government.

While progressive governments in other countries have deployed digital technology to advance transparency and unshackle information to fuel knowledge and innovation, Canada has been held back by the most secretive government in its history.

To create a new level of accountability for government spending and to spur innovation and economic growth, a Liberal government will open government to the public through four specific measures.

The Liberal Open Government Initiative will:

Immediately restore the long-form census;

Make as many government datasets as possible available to the public online free of
charge at opendata.gc.ca in an open and searchable format, starting with Statistics
Canada data, including data from the long-form census;

Post all Access to Information requests, responses, and response times online at
accesstoinformation.gc.ca; and

Make information on government grants, contributions and contracts available through
a searchable, online database at accountablespending.gc.ca.

For complete details, please read the PDF policy brochure.

While Stephen Harper takes credit for world leaders ‘agreeing to disagree’ on the major issues, international media had a different view of its outcome.

Pendant que Stephen Harper s’attribue le mérite du désaccord unanime des dirigeants du monde sur les grands enjeux, les médias internationaux, eux, ont des vues différentes sur les résultats du sommet :

SOMMET DE TORONTO: UN G20 POUR (PRESQUE) RIEN (Le Point (France), 28 juin 2010)

A MISSED OPPORTUNITY (The Times of India, June 28, 2010)

G20 : LES DIRIGEANTS NE TROUVENT PAS DE VOIE COMMUNE (Le Monde, France, 27 juin 2010)

G20 DEFICIT CUTS ‘A FANTASY’ (ABC News, United States, June 28, 2010)

GIPFEL DER ENTTÄUSCHUNG (THE SUMMIT OF DISAPPOINTMENT) (Focus Online, Germany, 28 June 2010)

NACH DEM G20-GIPFEL IN TORONTO: GABRIEL: MÄRKTE BLEIBEN UNREGULIERT (AFTER THE G20 SUMMIT IN TORONTO: GABRIEL: THE MARKETS REMAIN UNREGULATED) – (Stern.de, Germany, 28 June 2010)

G20: SZCZYT, KTÓREGO MOGLOBY NIE BYC (THE SUMMIT THAT COULD HAVE NOT BEEN) – (Gazeta Prawna, Poland, 28 June 2010)

G20 ACCORD: YOU GO YOUR WAY, I’LL GO MINE (Guardian, United Kingdom, June 28, 2010)

PO SZCZYCIE G20: EUROPA I USA MAJA RÓZNE WIZJE WYCHODZENIA Z KRYZYSU (AFTER THE G20 SUMMIT: EUROPE AND THE USA HAVE DIFFERENT VISIONS ON HOW TO EXIT THE CRISIS) – (Obserwator Finansowy, Poland, 28 June 2010)

“To some, the biggest challenge arises from the fact that G20 leaders failed in Toronto to work out a much-needed coordination in a reformed global financial mechanism which is required to tackle the much-entangled financial and economic crises the world over.” (Xinhua News Agency, China, June 28, 2010)

“It will be harder to stabilize the global economy based on the principles which came out of the G-20 Toronto meeting than to put a camel through the eye of a needle.” (24/7 Wall Street, United States, June 28, 2010)

“The Group of 20 leading economies agreed a form of words on Sunday that allowed all sides to claim their deficit reduction strategy had won out but is likely to make little difference in practice.” (Financial Times, United Kingdom, June 28, 2010)

“Other leaders at the summit hailed the commitment, which is meant to restore market confidence in rich countries’ stability, as one of the main successes of the meeting. But Sarkozy said that ‘it is not an order from the G20, and it is not a general G20 goal.’” (Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Germany, June 28, 2010)

« Les pays du G20 sont convenus dimanche de mettre en oeuvre des solutions différenciées pour retrouver le chemin d’une croissance durable et réguler leur système financier, prenant ainsi acte du caractère inégal et fragile de la reprise économique chez plusieurs d’entre eux. » (Reuters dans L’expresse, France, 28 juin 2010)

“It is the first time the G-20 has set dates for deficit reduction, but the timetable, which is not binding, will probably not require new policy actions. Most of the governments, including the United States, have already put forward budget proposals in line with the targets. The leaders also discussed banking regulations, but could not agree on a proposal for a global bank tax.” (The Hindu, India, June 28, 2010)

“Le G20 a pris acte lors du sommet de Toronto, au Canada, de l’hétérogénéité de toutes les économies qui composent ce groupe de pays riches et émergents, ce qui l’a amené à promouvoir des mesures à la carte pour chacun. Le long communiqué final publié dimanche est truffé de signes de cette diversité. » (Agence France Presse, 28 juin 2010)

“The summit played poorly at home, where images of protesters torching police cars often overshadowed the political and financial discussions in the meeting itself. Prime Minister Stephen Harper also came under fire for a $1 billion security bill and for the costly “fake lake” inside the media center. Billed as a way for visiting reporters to experience the lakeside landscape where the G8 summit took place, it turned out to be a small, square pool of water.” (Reuters, June 28, 2010)

TORONTO— Liberal Consular Affairs Critic Dan McTeague, M.P. (Pickering-Scarborough East) is calling upon Prime Minister Stephen Harper to raise the plights of Canadian citizens detained in Mexico, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and China in meetings with the leaders of these countries at the G-20 Summit in Toronto.

“The G-20 presents an excellent opportunity for Mr. Harper to press the cases of several Canadians detained abroad under dubious charges. Mr. Harper should raise the case of Pavel Kulisek with Mexican president Felipe Calderon. Also, he should speak to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia about Mohammed Kohail; to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi about Mr. Bashir Makhtal who is imprisoned in Ethiopia; and to Chinese President Hu Jintao about Mr. Huseyin Celil. All four Canadians have been incarcerated for years without receiving due process. The Canadian government has not firmly and directly stood up for them with the leadership of the countries involved,” said McTeague.

“The governments that continue to hold these Canadians and deny them basic and internationally-recognized legal rights cannot expect to attend the summit in Toronto without being made fully aware that Canada demands justice for its detained citizens. It is also unacceptable for the Conservative government to pay lip service to these cases and fail to protest the injustices being these Canadians are facing. Mr. Harper must use the G-20 Summit to personally register, in the strongest possible terms, the concern Canada has about the cases directly with the leaders of the countries involved,” added McTeague.
